your best not to be distracted by the
cliffs looming to the right of the fairway as
you prepare to tee off on the home hole of Arnold
Palmer’s
Old Course. If the layout of Arthur Hills’s
Ocean Course is more to your liking,
do your best to manage the howling winds that
can wreak havoc on this nearly treeless track.
Other excellent golf is found one hour east and a world away from San Francisco in the peaceful Livermore Valley. Here you can play Poppy Ridge and the Course at Wente Vineyards, a CORK & TEE Hidden Gem. If time permits, you should experience both; otherwise, Wente is a must-play. This Greg Norman masterpiece combines excellent routing, challenging elevation changes and some of the finest greens on the west coast to produce one of the most well-balanced courses we have played in recent years. You might need some help from the Shark himself as you attempt to negotiate the back-breaking final three holes. The scenery is spectacular and quintessential California—grassy hills dotted with lone oak trees. Do not miss this incredibly challenging and peaceful setting!
