| Suggested Itinerary: |
| |
| Day 1, Sunday, September 18: Arrival to Shannon Airport in County Clare, Southwest Ireland. Meet your driver in the Arrivals Hall (we hate to say “driver” as these gents are much more than that!). Private transfer 50 min to The Lodge at Doonbeg, a spectacular five-star golf resort located on the beautiful West Coast of Clare. Check-in upon arrival based on room availability. Afternoon golf on property at Doonbeg’s championship course, a modern masterwork by Greg Norman that embodies all the elements of a classic Irish links. (If you don’t wish to play golf on your day of arrival, we would be happy to substitute Doonbeg for Lahinch on the following day). Enjoy the ambiance of Doonbeg’s Darby’s Pub and your first pint of Guinness following your round. Accommodations: The Lodge at Doonbeg |
| Day 2, Monday, September 19: Morning at leisure. Enjoy Doonbeg’s wonderful White Horses Spa or venture into the charming Victorian-era town of Kilkee. Nearby are the impossibly-beautiful Cliffs of Kilkee and the scenic Loop Head Drive. Your driver is available in the morning if you wish to explore West Clare. Following lunch at leisure, afternoon transfer 35 min up the coast for golf at Lahinch/Old Course. Tonight, we suggest dinner at Naughton’s, famous for seafood, in Kilkee. Accommodations: The Lodge at Doonbeg |
| Day 3, Tuesday, September 20: Morning departure for County Kerry and the regional hub of Killarney. En route is a very special treat: 18 holes at Ballybunion/Old Course, simply the finest golf course in the west of Ireland. Continue on 1 hr to Killarney and the scenic splendor of County Kerry. Accommodations: Killarney Park Hotel, the essence of a traditional Irish country house hotel in a town setting and Killarney’s only five-star property. Dinner on your own with recommendations from CORK & TEE |
| Day 4, Wednesday, September 21: Experience the Ring of Kerry, a driving route that will expose you to charming towns and villages such as Kenmare and Sneem, as well as the highly-memorable coastal and inland scenery of the Irish countryside. In the evening, we have arranged for an educational, Irish whiskey tasting with Padruig O’Sullivan, who may know more about Irish whiskey than anyone else in all of County Kerry (and that’s saying something!). Dinner on your own, plus you may wish to experience a traditional music session at Buckley’s or any other of the fine music venues in town. You will want to sing along! No doubt it will be a lovely day for a Guinness. Accommodations: Killarney Park Hotel |
| Day 5, Thursday, September 22: Mid-morning departure to Dublin with a lunch stop en-route in Cashel, home to the Rock of Cashel, one of Ireland’s leading historical sites. You will have an opportunity to explore the ancient remains of this former Christian center and home of the kings of Munster during an hour-long public tour of medieval ruins such as the 13th-century St. Patrick’s Cathedral and Cormac’s Chapel, which dates to the 12th century. Pub lunch on your own in Cashel. Mid-afternoon arrival to Dublin and check-in at your hotel, the landmark Shelbourne Hotel, a true classic five-star property overlooking magnificent St. Stephen’s Green. This arguably is the best address in Dublin. Pre-dinner walking tour to expose you to some of the history and highlights of this delightful European capital. Your tour will end at one of Dublin’s historic “literary pubs,” which have been featured in masterworks of classic literature such as James Joyce’s Ulysses. Accommodations: The Shelbourne |

| Event Overview: |
| |
| The Solheim Cup: The Solheim Cup is a biennial, team match-play golf tournament between teams formed of the best U.S.-born players from the LPGA Tour and the best European members from the Ladies European Tour. It is named for the Norwegian-American golf club manufacturer Karsten Solheim (Karsten Manufacturing Corporation, aka PING), who was a driving force behind its creation. The U.S. Team leads the competition, 8-3, and has never lost the Cup on home soil. The inaugural Solheim Cup was held in 1990, and the event was subsequently played in even number years until 2002, alternating years with the Ryder Cup. As a result of the one-year postponement of the 2001 Ryder Cup due to the 9/11 attack, The Solheim Cup switched to odd numbered years beginning in 2003. |
Killeen Castle Golf Club: Working on the site of one of Ireland’s oldest and finest 12th-century Norman castles, Nicklaus has created a masterpiece over a 350-acre expanse of idyllic, natural parkland and designed the course so that it can be set up to provide an array of championship challenges, all the while allowing for an enjoyable round by the casual golfer. Pristine bentgrass greens reward purely struck putts while demanding precise distance control, and the “typical” Nicklaus bunkering frames approaches and penalizes the errant ones. Literally hundreds of mature hardwood trees frame the lush fairway corridors. Killeen is a challenge for the world’s greatest men players as well, as it can be stretched to more than 7,600 yards, and it will make for a truly memorable Solheim Cup. http://www.killeencastle.com/ |
Competition Format: The foursomes format features two-member teams, with players hitting alternate shots using the same ball. At the end of each hole, one score is recorded for the team. In contrast, a four-ball match has each player playing her own ball throughout the entire match. At the end of each hole, the better score of the two teammates is recorded; therefore, only one score from each team is recorded for each hole.
For the singles competition, one U.S. and one European player compete against each another in head-to-head match play. Each plays her own ball throughout the round and records her own score for each hole. In all matches, a win earns 1 point and a halve (tie) earns ½ point.
